Dorothy Adams Celebrates A Century

Today the Adams Insurance family honors the matriarch of the Adams family, Dorothy Adams. She celebrates her 100th birthday today!

Dorothy Jones was born and raised in Houston, Texas. At age 26 she married Maurice G. Adams, and they had three children – Donnie, Shirley and Norman.

‘M.G.’ started Adams Insurance Service in 1947 in a one-room office (with only half a street address number) on North Shepherd. Dorothy worked at the agency as assistant her husband. Known to her grandchildren as ‘Nanny,’ Dorothy served as Sunday school teacher to pre-schoolers for over 50 years at Our Savior Lutheran Church. She designed and meticulously sewed beautiful outfits for Barbies and other dolls – some of the most sought-after items at church bazaars.

After Maurice’s passing in 1975, Dorothy came out of retirement to work at the agency and help wherever she could, and did not retire ‘for real’ until the age of 90. She now resides at her home in Garden Oaks.

There is a page in this week’s Leader acknowledging her special day. She received over 100 birthday cards from friends and family, and even one from the President and First Lady!

Congratulations to Nanny on reaching this milestone birthday!

This is my day I proudly say

For I have now reached twenty-one

I feel quite old, as years unfold,

But then, I guess life's just begun.

When I was small; not near so tall,

And my years were few in number,

Twas then I'd wait to celebrate

Anxiously, this day of summer.

But now I wish the years to push

Backward, as time rolls quickly by.

But I'll stay young, is the song I've sung,

Until God takes my soul on high.

- 'Now I'm Twenty-One' - A poem by Dorothy J. Adams
